Professor Ivan Birch (UK)

 

Professor Ivan Birch is Consultant Expert Witness in forensic gait analysis with FGA Services and Emeritus Professor of Human Sciences. Ivan graduated in 1978 with a BSc Joint Honours in Science from the University of Salford, gained an MSc in Human Biology from the University of Loughborough in 1980, and was awarded a PhD in Biomechanics by the University of Brighton in 2007. He has extensive experience of teaching biomechanics, anatomy, physiology and research methods, and is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Podiatry. He was a Member of the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences from 2012 to 2024, and held the status of Chartered Scientist, awarded by the Science Council for his work in gait analysis as evidence, from 2015 to 2024. Ivan has more than 40 years' experience of gait analysis.

Dr Michael Nirenberg (USA)

Dr. Nirenberg is a clinical and forensic podiatrist with expertise in forensic gait analysis. He has assisted in criminal matters involving footprints, footwear and gait in USA, UK and Canada. Dr. Nirenberg served as a co-editor of the textbook “Forensic Gait Analysis: Principles and Practice,” published by Taylor & Francis CRC Press. His paper, “Forensic Methods and the Podiatric Physician,” published in 1989, was among the first articles to recognize forensic podiatry as a distinct discipline and was bestowed the Distinguished Podiatric Medical Writing Award. He is an avid speaker and has lectured to forensic scientists, law enforcement, physicians and attorneys. Dr. Nirenberg currently serves as president of the American Society of Forensic Podiatry. He practices in Crown Point, Indiana, USA, and has more than 30 years of experience in gait analysis.

Jason Cuddyer (USA)

Jason has a solid background in biometrics and identity analysis with a focus on Forensic Gait Analysis. Certified by the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences and active in the International Association for Identification in Forensic Gait Analysis, his professional standing is well-acknowledged. As a Senior Biometrics Researcher and Subject Matter Expert, Jason explored advancing technology while also liaising with key stakeholders to ensure accurate application of this specialized skill. Active in notable forensic and biometric communities, and a regular participant in industry workshops and conferences, his innovative approaches and continuous learning have positioned him as a thought leader in the Biometrics and Forensic communities, particularly within Forensic Gait Analysis.

Nadia Asgeirsdottir (UK)

Nadia graduated in 2007 with a BSc in Biology from the University of Toronto, Canada. She gained Advanced Specialty Certificates in Forensic Investigation and in Crime Scene Analysis from the British Columbia Institute of Technology in 2010. In 2018 Nadia was awarded an MSc in Forensic Science from the University of Strathclyde, her research project being titled ‘The identification of individuals by observational gait analysis using closed circuit television footage: comparing expert and non-expert ability and confidence levels’. Nadia is an Associate Member of the Chartered Society of Forensic Science, holds the Society’s certificates of professional competence in both Forensic Gait Analysis and Barefoot/Foot in Shoe Analysis.

Nicholas Harris (Canada)

Nick Harris obtained a BSc Hons Degree in Podiatry from Salford University in 1995. Emigrating to Canada in 2002 he made a switch and joined the Peel Regional Police service in 2003. In 2016 Nick joined the Forensic Identification services with Peel Regional Police and began utilizing his experience in podiatry and applying it forensically to assist criminal investigations. Nick has advanced training in numerous forensic disciplines, including footwear impression examination, barefoot morphology, fingerprint examinations, and is a qualified expert witness within the Canadian court system. Nick is also the only known certified forensic gait analyst currently in Canada.

Dr. Christine Miller (USA)

Dr. Christine Miller is a forensic an wound healing podiatrist and serves on the Board of Directors for the American Society of Forensic Podiatry. She obtained a professional competence certificate in Forensic Gait Analysis (FGA) from the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences (UK) and remains an affiliate member of this organization. Christine is also a member of the International Association for Identification and has presented on the topics of FGA and paleopathology at its annual conferences. Dr. Miller is an assistant professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Florida, College of Medicine-Jacksonville.
